Tuesday is symbolic of the point into the new week that a woman must work in order to earn the wages paid to a man in the previous week. According to statistics released in September 2001 by the US Census Bureau, year-round, full-time working women earned only 73% of the earnings of year-round, full-time working men. Because women, on average, earn less, they must work longer for the same pay. Over a working lifetime, this wage disparity costs the average American woman and her family an estimated $250,000 in lost wages. Each year, the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) organizes the national observance of Equal Pay Day to raise awareness about unfair pay in America. "Poll after poll has demonstrated that unfair pay ranks as one of the top issues of concern for working women. The wage gap affects women throughout their working lives and then follows them into retirement where they receive lower pension and Social Security benefits based on the salaries they received while working," said Jane E.
